For keen anglers who love fishing breaks, UK holidays are the perfect way to enjoy a relaxing escape where you can try to land a big one. Here are a few of our favourite destinations for fishing getaways around the UK.

Horseshoe Lake, Gloucestershire

Living up to its name, this iconic fishing lake on the border of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire has a distinctive horseshoe shape, with land jutting out into the middle of the lake making a perfect place from which to cast your line. Carp have been fished here for decades and the site has hosted a number of competitions.

Nowadays, Horseshoe Lake is better stocked than ever and is perfect for fishing breaks. In order to fish here you’ll have to be a member of the Carp Society, with a £25 annual membership gaining you access to a number of carp fishing sites around the UK with a small additional fee for tickets.

Chesil Beach, Dorset

If you prefer fishing breaks by the sea, Dorset’s Chesil Beach is a very popular destination. Stretching 18 miles, this stunning shingle barrier beach is backed by a tidal lagoon called the Fleet for much of its length, making it a unique landmark as well as an excellent fishing spot.

Chesil Beach in DorsetThe steeply sloping shore at Chesil Beach means that the water swiftly drops off, offering plenty of depth to fish without having to go far in, which is why it’s such a beloved destination for fishing breaks. UK anglers also love the fact that the beach’s length offers plenty of space to fish and different species can be caught in different areas. Night fishing is popular here and common catches include bass, pouting, and conger eels.

Loch Leven, Scotland

Loch Leven is another destination which offers stunning scenery and which is ideal for fishing breaks in the UK. Managed by Loch Leven Fisheries, this location is perfect for catching brown trout, being the source of its own unique subspecies, Salmo trutta levensis. The trout-fishing season lasts from the end of March to the start of October. Loch Leven is also a great place to fish for pike, with the best months being from April until June.

Fishing the 3,600 acres available at Loch Leven can only be done from one of the fishery’s boats, with angling from the bank not permitted. For some of the best fishing breaks in the UK, you have to pay a visit.

Lake Windermere, Cumbria

The Lake District is, unsurprisingly, a top destination for fishing breaks in the UK. Though only three lakes in the area are available for public fishing, the fact that one of them is Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, means there’s plenty of opportunities to land a catch.
